Imperial Treasury Location: How to Get There by Subway and Bus

Reaching the Imperial Treasury Vienna is convenient due to its central location near other prominent landmarks like the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien and the Theseustempel. Visitors have several transportation options to choose from.

Since the Hofburg Palace is located in the heart of Vienna’s First District (a designated pedestrian and low-emission zone), driving directly to the Treasury’s entrance is not possible. The most convenient option is to park your vehicle at a nearby public garage, such as the Contipark Tiefgarage Am Hof or the Garage Robert-Stolz-Platz. From there, it is a pleasant 5–10 minute walk through the historic city center to reach the Schweizerhof courtyard. Be aware that street parking in the city center is limited to residents and requires short-term parking vouchers (Kurzparkscheine), so a garage is always the safer and more stress-free choice.

The City Bus lines 1A and 2A offer the closest drop-off points to the museum, making them perfect for those already in the city center. You should get off at the Michaelerplatz or Hofburg stop. Once you step off the bus, you will find yourself directly in front of the magnificent Michaelertor gate; simply walk through the gate under the dome and follow the signs across the inner courtyard to the Schweizerhof (Swiss Court), where the Treasury entrance is located.

If you are arriving via Vienna’s efficient tram network (Straßenbahn), lines 1, 2, 71, or D are your best options. Disembark at the Burgring stop, which positions you right on the majestic Ringstraße. From here, walk through the Heldenplatz (Heroes' Square) towards the central palace complex; this scenic route takes about 5–7 minutes and offers stunning views of the New Palace (Neue Burg) before you reach the older sections where the Treasury is hidden.

The Vienna U-Bahn is one of the fastest ways to reach the museum. Take the U3 (Orange Line) to the Herrengasse station. After exiting, it is a short 3-minute walk down the Herrengasse street until you reach Michaelerplatz. Alternatively, if you are on the U1 (Red Line), you can get off at Stephansplatz and enjoy a slightly longer (about 8–10 minutes) but beautiful walk down the Graben and Kohlmarkt shopping streets, which leads you straight to the palace gates.

Vienna is a very bike-friendly city, and you can easily reach the Hofburg using the dedicated cycle paths along the Ringstraße. While you cannot ride your bike inside the palace courtyards themselves, there are plenty of bicycle racks located at the main entry points, specifically at Michaelerplatz and Heldenplatz. If you are using the city’s rental system, WienMobil Rad (formerly CityBike), look for the nearest docking stations at these same locations to drop off your bike before proceeding on foot to the Treasury.

For many visitors, walking is the most enjoyable way to arrive. If you are starting from St. Stephen’s Cathedral (Stephansdom), walk down the elegant Graben street, turn left onto Kohlmarkt (famous for its luxury boutiques and the Demel bakery), and continue straight until you hit Michaelerplatz. Walk through the giant archway of the palace, go straight across the first courtyard, and look for the red-and-black Swiss Gate (Schweizertor) on your left; pass through it, and the Treasury entrance will be on your right in the corner of the courtyard.
