Belvedere Museum Vienna Location: How to Get There by Subway and Bus

Reaching the Belvedere Museum Vienna is convenient through various modes of transportation, accommodating visitors arriving by public transit, car, or on foot.

Driving in Vienna can be tricky due to strict city parking rules, but it is doable if you know where to go. Please note that the Belvedere does not have its own parking lot. Your best option is to use a nearby public garage like the Garage Andaz Vienna Am Belvedere or the facilities at Potsdamer Straße. Avoid street parking if possible—Vienna’s "Kurzparkzonen" (short-term parking zones) are strictly enforced and can be confusing for visitors.

If you are coming from further afield, the subway is your fastest bet. Take the U1 (Red Line) to the Südtiroler Platz-Hauptbahnhof station. From there, look for the "Belvedere" exit signs; it is about a 15-minute walk to the Upper Belvedere entrance. While it’s a bit of a hike compared to the tram, you’ll be walking through the modern "Quartier Belvedere" district, which offers a cool contrast to the baroque history you are about to see.

This is arguably the most scenic and direct way to reach the palace gates. For the Upper Belvedere (home of The Kiss), hop on Tram D and get off at the "Schloss Belvedere" stop—it drops you right at the front door. If you are starting your journey at the Lower Belvedere for a temporary exhibition, take Tram 71 instead and exit at "Unteres Belvedere." Both trams run frequently along the famous Ringstrasse, so you get a mini sightseeing tour of Vienna’s historic center on your way there.

Arriving by train? You are in luck. The Quartier Belvedere station is a major hub served by multiple S-Bahn lines. Once you disembark, you are just steps away from the Upper Belvedere’s southern gates. If you are arriving internationally at Vienna’s main Central Station (Wien Hauptbahnhof), you can either walk 15 minutes to the museum or transfer to the U1 metro or Tram D to save your legs for the gallery galleries.

Vienna is incredibly bike-friendly, and arriving on two wheels is a fantastic way to see the city. You can cycle along the dedicated paths on the Ringstrasse until you hit Schwarzenbergplatz, then head up Prinz-Eugen-Straße. There are plenty of public bike racks located in the immediate vicinity of the Upper Belvedere entrance. If you are using the city’s bike-share system (WienMobil Rad), you will find docking stations nearby, making it easy to drop off your ride and head straight for the art.

If the weather is nice, the walk from St. Stephen’s Cathedral (Stephansplatz) to the Belvedere is a must-do. It takes about 25–30 minutes and leads you through the heart of the city. Head towards Schwarzenbergplatz—you can’t miss it, thanks to the massive fountain and the Soviet War Memorial. From there, you have a choice: walk up the incline on the right to reach the Upper Belvedere, or head straight down Rennweg street on the left to enter via the Lower Belvedere.
